I have always been crazy about astronomy. I used to bore my friends like big time on astronomy when I was in primary school. During a vacation I attended a astronomy course in the cities planetarium, to my surprise they were younger kids who were even more crazy about astronomy, the impressive part was these people build their own huge telescopes that were very effective. I always wanted to build one. With this information my son and I can build a telescope together .Thank you for the information.

Hi, i must say that this is an impressive hobby. The world needs a people like you who has a passion in astronomy. What i could suggest is that you inquire to the any laboratory that is accessible in your place and their you can discuss this matter to the people which i believe can give you professional advice.

One thing I'd like to mention is to take a look at the specs. There are two specs that you should be aware of - aperture and magnification. Just because you're a beginner doesn't mean you shouldn't get a telescope that isn't worth the box it came in.

Aperture - This is the light collecting capacity of a telescope, or the diameter of the lens/mirror. The larger the aperture, the larger the capacity for collecting light. Therefore, the more you will be able to see.

Magnification - Now a lot of people think the more magnification the better. This is not always the case, as the quality of image decreases as magnification increases. Rather, you should use different magnification ranges for different viewing objectives. 30 - 50 x magnification is best for observing observing galaxies, star clusters and nebulae. 80 - 100 x is best for observing rings, craters, and valleys of planets. 150 - 200 x is best for observing surfaces with a wide range of variation, such as mountain ranges and peaks. You can switch between different magnification ranges by swapping out eye pieces.

I am looking to get one for my son as a present. I bought him one when he was younger, but you could only really see the moon through it. I guess I will need to go up market this time..

Hi Michael

You could try to find out whether there is an astronomy club anywhere near you - they can not only let you use better equipment than you might have but you can meet very knowlegable people there and discuss the hobby.

I am quite passionate about astronomy and the entire science about it. I have most type of rare books in my collection and have done some extensive reading, but I never have got the chance for practical exposure and experimenting. The equipments are priced highly and I cant afford for them. Do you know any places where they rent or just allow us to use it from their premises?
