An exoplanet (or extrasolar planet) is a planet orbiting a star different from the Sun (the "exo" prefix means "outside" in Greek). Up until now, one has found mainly gas giant planets, which are easier to detect than telluric planets. However, due to the increasing sensitivity of the detection methods, one already begins to observe the first planets of sizes comparable to the Earth.

Hi Sarah

Probably the discoveries we'll see will be more and more as equipment and computing power to go through all the data gathered improves...

I have heard that the Kepler satellite has already started discovering more exoplanets, at the end of the mission we should be aware of many more smaller earthlike planets, hopefully.

I seen an interesting television show I believe it was on National Geographic about planets inside our own galaxy that are in the "tempurate" zone that could be earthlike. Amazing stuff. I look forward to hearing of the first one discovered!

Hi Georgiy

A transit of a planet in our own solar system cannot be compared with those of exoplanets - main reason are the completely different size and distance relations.

I thought transit method would make it quite apparent (transit of planets, specially mercury is a easily observable event in our solar system). Can solar storms etc. be confused with transit events and that's why a confirmation is required?

I don't know much about Exoplanet and despite my interest to know about our Solar System better, I think I've not done enough to support my that interest and get to know about our solar system better. There could be many mysterious out there which is still uncovered by the Scientists and it fascinates me a lot. Each discovery gets us a step closer to connect with other planets.

Such information does take one’s mind to far off places. First there was the theory of life on the moon, then life on other planets, and now life on planets outside of our solar system, and the best stuff is this isn’t even about ET, or the Martians we imagine.
